Good morning, Wild Ones! You?re probably as tired of this up and down weather as I am, but let?s think spring and focus on how beautiful these last few days have been. For our May meeting, we?ll return to Colonial Park (on the Root River just like our chapter name and designed by the famous naturalistic landscape architect Jens Jensen) to pull invasive weeds (mostly garlic mustard). Last year this was a huge event with many volunteers, music, and free pizza. This year there are too many hazards on the ground from all the ash tree removal, so it will be just us and Weed Out! Racine.
When: Saturday, May 5 9:00 am ? 12:00 pm
Where: Colonial Park in Racine (same location as last year, more detailed directions are below)
What: Garlic Mustard Removal!
Garbage bags will probably be provided, but bring gloves and trowels. Wear long pants and good shoes, and you might want binoculars or a camera (and maybe bug spray!). Member Melissa Warner organizes this every year, and she says we won?t recognize the place that we have been working the past few years because of the tree removal. Let?s keep up our good work and help rid Colonial Park of garlic mustard!
Detailed directions: We?ll be meeting at the south entrance to the park, which is off Spring Street in Racine, between Green Bay Rd and Northwestern Ave. Turn north off Spring Street onto Domanik Place (just west of Northwestern Ave), then an immediate left onto Domanik Dr. This will wind around for awhile, basically following the Root River, until you get to a turnoff on the left for a parking lot (this is just past the playing field). Park here ? there?s a small steelhead facility with nice signage you can look at ?? and large glass windows to see the fish! We?ll be following the Root River Pathway (it parallels the parking lot) across a bridge and into the woods.
Hope to see you there. Stay Wild!
Chris
